THE POWER OF A MOTHER

PowerofMother
A woman sat by a hearthside place,
Reading a book with a pleasant face,
Till a child came up, with a childish frown,
And pushed the book saying, “Put it down.”
Then the mother, slapping his curly head,
Said, “Troublesome child, go off to bed;
A great deal of Christ’s life I must know,
To train you up as a child should go.”
And the child went off to bed to cry,
And renounce religion — by and by.

Another woman bent over a book
With a smile of joy and an intent look,
Till a child came by and jogged her knee,
And said of the book, “Put it down — take me.”
Then the mother sighed as she stroked his head,
Saying softly, “I shall never get it read;
But I’ll try by loving to learn His will,
And His love into my child instill.”
That child went to bed without a sigh,
And will love the Savior — by and by.

HE’S OUR SON

HesOurSon

HE’S OUR SON
What if he scatters my pans on the floor?
What if his tractor and truck block the door?
What if he fingermarks books by score?
He’s our son!

What if he keeps me up night after night?
What if he causes me months of fright?
What if the house is sometimes a sight?
He’s our son!

What if he makes a great deal of noise?
What if at times I minus my poise?
He’s no more trouble than all little boys!
He’s our son!

What if he cancels planes, I have known?
What if my reading I’m forced to postpone?
King of our household we proudly enthrone—
Our little son!

TEN COMMANDMENTS FOR COUPLES

CouplesTen

FOR THE WIFE:
1. Honor thine own womanhood, that thy days may be long in the house which thy husband provideth for thee.
2. Expect not thy husband to give thee as many luxuries as thy father hath given thee after many years of hard labor and economies.
3. Forget not the virtue of good humor for verily all that a man hath will he give for a woman’s smile.
4. Thou shalt not nag.
5. Thou shalt coddle thy husband for verily every man loveth to be fussed over.
6. Remember that the frank approval of thy husband is worth more to thee than the sidelong glances of many strangers.
7. Forget not the grace of cleanliness and good dressing.
8. Permit no one to assure thee that thou art having a hard time of it: neither thy mother, nor thy sister, nor thy maiden aunt, for the judge will not hold her guiltless who letteth another disparage her husband.
9. Keep thy home with all diligence for out of it cometh the joys of thine old age.
10. Commit thy ways unto the Lord, thy God, and thy children shall rise up and call thee blessed.

FOR THE HUSBAND:
1. Rember thy wife is thy partner, not thy property.
2. Do not expect thy wife to be thy wife and wage-earner at the same time.
3. Think not thy business is none of thy wife’s business.
4. Thou shalt hold thy wife’s love by the same way you won it.
5. Thou shalt make thy home thy first business.
6. Thou shalt co-operate with thy wife in establishing family discipline.
7. Thou shalt enter into thy house with cheerfulness.
8. Thou shalt not let anyone criticize thy wife to thy face and get away with it: neither thy father, nor thy mother, nor thy brothers, nor thy sister, nor any relatives.
9. Thou shalt not take thy wife for granted.
10. Remember thy home and keep it holy.

A MOTHER’S INFLUENCE

MotherInfluence
“The men of the nation are what their mothers make them, as a rule; and the voice which those men speak in the expression of their power is the voice of the woman who bore and bred them. There can be no substitute for this. There is no other possible way in which the women of the nation can organize their influence and power that will tell so beneficently upon society and the state.

“Neither woman nor the nation can afford to have home demoralized or in any way deteriorated by the loss of her presence, or the lessening of her influence there.

“As a nation we rise or fall as the character of our homes, presided over by woman, rises or falls; and the best gauge of our best prosperity is to be found in the measure by which these homes find multiplication in the land. Whatever . . . will tend to make home better, and it’s queen more modest and gentle and pure, shall have our earnest support.”

GOD’S SIDE OR THE DEVIL’S SIDE

GodsSideDevilsSide

God is Father. He loves to father. He is the source of all parenting. Talking about Jesus Christ, God says in Hebrews 1:5: “I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?” As we read this Scripture, we see God’s heart as a Father toward His “BELOVED Son,” Jesus Christ.

When we have a desire to bring forth children, we reveal the heart of our God. To desire to be a father and a mother is God-like. God gives to every person unique and differing gifts. However, no matter what gifts or career a man has, his greatest calling is fatherhood. He is made in the image of God who is a Father. Everything else in life serves this highest purpose.

It is the same for us as women. Each one of us has different gifts and abilities which we use for the blessing of others in this life. But we are essentially mothers. Or I should say quintessentially, for we were created for this purpose. When we embrace mothering and our nurturing anointing, we reveal God’s heart. The core of His heart.

Embrace your beautiful calling, mother. You are in God’s perfect will. You reveal His likeness to the world.

To reject mothering is to reject the likeness of God. (And precious mothers who are unable to have children of your own, please don’t despair. You are also great mothers as you release your nurturing anointing to those God brings into your life).

We see such a hatred today to God’s ultimate plan for families. It comes from the pit of hell. When it comes to our attitude toward family, we are either on God’s side or the devil’s side. There is no in-between.

Be blessed,

IN MY HUMBLE HOME

InHumbleHm

IN MY HUMBLE HOME

Here, in my humble kitchen,
Christ dwells.
And oh, what joy and peace
That spells.

For He, the King of Kings,
Brings hope
As bread brings bodily strength
To cope
With ev'ry daily task.

He makes
Just baking common pies
And cakes
Seem sort of special, an art
Which excels.
For where Christ is,
There, too, love dwells.

GRINDING WHEAT

GrindingWheat
A postscript to the poem below.

Hannah was one of my lovely Above Rubies helpers. Her grandmother, Helen Walker, was one of my dear friends in New Zealand. I met her when I was a young mother, the first time to meet a mother with 12 children! She was filled with the grace and love of the Lord. This family was totally self-sufficient and grew all their own food.

Their dining room was like being in church. They had retrieved some beautiful stained glass windows from an old church which made the room look so amazing. She had poker-worked (I think you call it pyrography here in USA) the big wooden table with Scripture verses for the children to read and learn every day, and they had church pews around the table.

It was Helen who gave me the inspiration to begin grinding wheat for making bread. I had begun to make my own bread but Helen said something to me which aroused my attention.

“Nancy,” she said. “I started noticing an improvement in the health of all my children, not when I began baking bread, but when I began to grind the wheat freshly before each baking.”

That was a “good enough” testimony for me, so I thought I’d do it also. But where could I get a wheat grinder? There were none around back in those days. I had some friends who were farmers, and they owned a huge contraception which they used for griding grain for their pigs!

“Can I borrow your machine?” I asked. Every couple of weeks I would go out to their farm and grind my grain on this big machine! As the saying goes, “Where there’s a will there’s a way.”

Eventually, my husband found a commercial coffee grinder and I used that for awhile, until eventually we found a wonderful stone ground mill.

Today we are blessed that we can purchase grinders that can fit on the kitchen counter. I use the Wonder Mill. My grinder never leaves my counter as I grind all my grain freshly. I no longer make bread as I used to. Today, I make sour dough bread and use spelt and rye grains. I love my bread. It has the most wonderful flavor.

I think a wheat grinder is one of the most important gadgets we can have in the kitchen. When you purchase flour, just think how long it may have been sitting in the shop losing all its goodness while it sits waiting for you to buy it. Even if I have some flour left over from grinding, I keep it in the fridge.

Love from Nancy Campbell

Picture: I found this old picture of grinding the wheat in an old Above Rubies magazine from February 1980! I am with Lois Jordan who used to do all the layout for Above Rubies. In those days we did not have computers, and she did it manually with “cut and paste.” Wow, I look a little younger in this picture!

THE UNKNOWN MISSIONARY

UnknowMissionary
My mother, the unknown missionary
With five noisy children in tow,
From dawn till dusk we kept her busy
As she taught us and watched us grow.

Those child-days were long and wearisome
With babies, toddlers, and more.
But training up children in the way they should go
Was a mandate to Mum, not a chore.

It wasn’t easy with many small children,
The days stretched out long one by one,
“Don’t grow weary in doing what’s good”
Was the Scripture that encouraged Mum.

To God, she always taught us to look,
Him we were taught to love,
As Friend and Savior, Lord of all,
Our minds were on things above.

Now we are grown and have all left home,
Waving goodbye one by one,
But we’ll always be impacted by the lessons taught
By the unknown missionary, our Mum.

YOU ARE THE BEST, MOTHER!

YouAreBest
I am sure that when you teach your children to do a task that you teach them to do it well. You don’t stand for shoddy work. You teach them to do it to the best of their ability. Of course, the best way to teach them is to show this example yourself. Isn’t that so true? How can we teach our children excellence if we do shoddy work ourselves?

We manifest this attitude in our great career of mothering. When people choose a career, they determine to give it their best. Because motherhood is the greatest and highest career God has given to us, we should also give it our best. Aim for excellence.

Dear mothers, don’t think of getting by with the minimum you have to do. Embrace motherhood with all your heart. Give it all you’ve got. Hone your art because mothering is an art. Just as breastfeeding is an art. Birthing is an art. Homemaking is an art. We can be average, or we can excel.

What is the testimony of the Proverbs 31 woman? Proverbs 31:29 says: “Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou EXCELLEST them all.”

The Hebrew word for “excellest” is “alah.” It is often translated “arise up,” “let us go up,” ascended,” “climbed up,” “exalted.” As you can see, it’s not below average or average, but over the top.

1 Corinthians 15:58 exhorts to “ABOUND in the work of the Lord.” The “work” (notice that it is “work,” not play) that God has given us to do is mothering and training the next generation to be godly young men and women who will fill this earth with God’s glory. How do we do this work?

The word is “abound.” The Greek word is “perisseuo” and it means “to EXCEL more than, to exceed, to superabound, to be over the top, over and above, overflowing, abundance.”

The Holman translation says: “Always EXCELLING in the Lord’s work.”

NET: “Always be OUTSTANDING in the work of the Lord.”

NLT: “Always work ENTHUSIASTICALLY for the Lord.” By the way, notice that these Scriptures say "always." That means when we feel like and even when we don't feel like it!

Don’t stand for the status quo. Go beyond the normal as you become the greatest wife your husband could ever dream about and the most outstanding mother as you nurture and train your children.
I know you are the best!

Many blessings to you today,

Nancy Campbell

THINGS THAT MOTHERS DO

ThingsMothersDo
THINGS THAT MOTHERS DO
She loved you when you first arrived,
Did all she could to help you thrive,
Held you close and sang you songs,
Listened for you all night long.
She gladly spent herself for you.
These are the things that mothers do.

She changed your clothes and wiped your nose,
Sang, "This little piggie" to your toes,
Thought about you day and night,
Prayed she'd raise and train you right,
Hoped God's way of life you'd choose.
These are the things that mothers do.

Some days along the way got rough,
She wondered if she’d done enough.
To raise you, there was much to learn
But she was given just one turn.
She asked that God would see you through.
These are the things that mothers do.

She wished to slow the fleeting years,
Praised your triumphs, wiped your tears.
She knew you'd grow and someday go,
But often wished it wasn't so.
Still in her heart, she holds to you.
These are things that mothers do.

You are special to so many others,
But no one loves you like your mother.
When you’ve grown and gone your way
All through your life, your mom will pray
That God will bless and shelter you.
These are the things that mothers do.

I LOVE BEING YOUR MOMMMY

LoveBeingMommyI LOVE BEING YOUR MOMMMY
By Lauren Beck

I love being your mommy! It really is the best!
I feel like the most blessed woman in the entire Southwest!

I love watching your joy when you learn something new
Or when you want to play Go Fish all afternoon.

I love the flowers and leaves you all pick for me,
And when you call my name, wanting me to see.

I love days filled with chatter, hugs, and questions,
Teaching, training, and discipline lessons.

I love teaching you to read and write,
Each one of you are so very bright!

I love your grand imaginations when you play,
Each of you dreaming of who you’ll be one day.

When I’m grouchy and tired, thank you for forgiving me,
A kinder, more patient mommy is who I pray to be.

Being your mommy has stretched me to see,
That life is no longer just all about me.

Some people say I’m crazy for having all of you,
We laugh on the way home because we know it’s not true!

My erratic sleeping patterns some may not desire,
But cuddling little babes in the night, of that I’ll never tire.

I don’t mind the time cooking you healthy food,
I’m learning to find joy in cooking for my little brood.

You see, nothing I’ve ever done or seen in my life
Compares to being your mother and your daddy’s wife.

I’m understanding the blessings that you all truly are,
Being your mommy is THE BEST CAREER by far!

LAUREN BECK * laurenlizhope@

Lauren writes: “This poem was written at the 10-year mark of leaving my career in the United States Air Force and becoming a full-time wife and mother in my home. It's been 15 years now that I have been home with my children. I remember well-meaning friends being concerned that I'd regret my decision to leave the military service which I had loved. What could have been more impactful than serving your country?

“None of us realized I was being called by God to even more impactful work! The Career of Motherhood. This career would break down my pride, daily strip away my selfishness, and reveal a love that I had never dreamed of. Motherhood has made me very aware of my need for Christ and His redeeming work to save me from my sinful heart. By His grace, I now mother the children He has given me, for His glory, with all my heart.”

YOU ARE A LIGHT SHINER

LightShinerGod is light. He brought light into the world. And now He has chosen us, His people, to shine His light in the darkness around us and to all we meet.

2 Corinthians 4:6 says: “For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” What an amazing thing to have God shine into our hearts. But He doesn’t want us to keep the light hidden. He fills us with light “to give the light” to others. The “others” are firstly those who surround us in our home.

Mother, you are a life-giver to the world. But God also wants you to be a light giver. Do you smile at your husband each time you look at him? This is how you shine your light? What about your children? Are you a smiling and happy mother to them? It’s not much use smiling at people outside the home if you are not smiling in your home.

I dislike living in a dark house. Some people like to keep their curtains drawn the whole time and everything is dark inside. I never close a curtain in our home except in our bedroom (of course, I can get away with it as we live in the country). I love as much light as possible to shine in. But even more importantly, I must remember to cast out all darkness and fill my home with God’s light.

The next verse says: “But we have this treasure in heavenly vessels, that the excellency of the power of may of God, and not of us.” Oops! Sorry, I typed this Scripture wrongly! It doesn’t say “heavenly.” The phrase is “earthen vessels.”

We don’t have to wait until we get to Heaven. God wants to fill our earthy vessels, our “jars of clay” with His light right now. In your home. Even with all the chaos. And everyone around will know that it is not you, but God shining through you!

Matthew 5:16: “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

Be a light shiner today,

Nancy Campbell

MODESTY

ModestyDear ladies, today I am sharing with you an article from Hannah, a lovely young single lady, 23 years old. I often write about modesty because I believe it is something that God loves. However, I think that sometimes the younger generation can think, “Oh well, Nancy is old school! She’s not up with the times.” Therefore, it’s great to hear from the younger generation.
Hannah’s article is very biblical. And that should be our standard, shouldn’t it? It’s not what the world says, but what God says. And God’s truth is for ALL generations. I am sure Hannah’s words will be a blessing to you and to your young daughters also.

~ Nancy

REFLECTING MODESY

Do you want to dress attractively but struggle with immodesty? The honest answer (if you are a woman like I am) is yes. Meaning aesthetically pleasing, attractive is how we want to appear. Though this is not wrong, the reason for it often is a desire to be noticed. Dressing to attract attention is immodest. So how can you dress modestly and why is it important?

MODESTY DEFINED

Modesty is viewing yourself properly and, as a result, behaving decorously. A virtue of the heart, modesty recognizes, “I am not the most important person in the world,” and determines “My attitude, actions, and appearance will befit who I truly am.”

Who are you? You are a woman fearfully and wonderfully made and loved by God, which gives you worth and purpose. You do not need the attention, acceptance, or approval of anyone but God. Yet you, like all humans, are sinful. Your natural tendencies lead you astray from God’s plan for your life, which includes being modest.

MODEST DRESS

Akin to humility and purity, modesty is a character quality that can be demonstrated by how you dress. It means denying your sinful nature that pridefully declares, “I can wear whatever I want,” and embracing clothing appropriate for your God-given femininity.

Traditionally, dresses and skirts beautifully distinguish women. In this age when gender confusion is lauded, I believe ladies should wear clothing that leaves no doubts about their feminineness. That said, I also believe pants are not immodest. For certain activities, such as swimming, skiing, hiking, and bicycling, they are more practical. Nevertheless, pants should meet the following three essentials of modest clothing.

THREE ESSENTIALS OF MODEST CLOTHING

1. Modest clothing does not reveal, emphasize, or draw attention to a woman’s private parts. Necklines then are neither deep nor wide, and they do not gap.

2. Modest clothing does not fit tightly, outlining a woman’s body.

3. Modest clothing completely covers the shoulders, knees, and everything in between – front, back, and sides.

If you are still unsure about an outfit being modest, ask yourself, “Does it draw attention away from my face?” A maxim of my mother’s is that nothing (clothing, make-up, etc.) should distract from the countenance.

Having learned what modesty and modest dressing is, we also need to know the reasons why dressing modestly is important.
WHY DRESS MODESTLY

Modest clothing honors God:

When Adam and Eve sinned by disobeying God’s command not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, they discovered they were naked and covered their most private parts (Genesis 3:7). They were not, however, clothed until God made them garments that hung from the shoulder (Genesis 3:21). Since the Fall God has communicated our nakedness should not be exposed (Exodus 20:26; Exodus 28; and Leviticus 18).

In Paul’s letter to Timothy, God specifically states: “I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly . . . as is proper for women making a claim to godliness” (I Timothy 2:9-10).

Modest clothing helps men to not sin:

Men are more sensitive to visual stimulation than women. When a man sees a woman dressed immodestly, his thoughts head in the wrong direction. Knowing this, we need to clothe ourselves carefully so that we are not stumbling blocks to men.

In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus describes the seriousness of provoking others to sin: “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believes in Me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a heavy millstone hung around his neck, and to be drowned in the depth of the sea. Woe to the world because of its stumbling blocks! For it is inevitable that stumbling blocks come; but woe to that man through whom the stumbling block comes” (Matthew 18:6-7, NASB).

Modest clothing hallows women:

Though only God can make people holy from the inside out, modest clothing does have a consecrative effect. It commands respect because it does not invite inappropriate attention. It sets women apart as worthy of honor rather than dishonor.

“Like a ring of gold in a swine’s snout is a beautiful woman who lacks discretion” (Proverbs 11:22, NASB).

“Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good, acceptable, and perfect” (Romans 12:1-2 NASB).

CHOOSING MODESTY

Outwardly expressed by dress and other behavior (like sitting with your knees together), modesty is a decision of the heart. Thus, it is possible to wear modest clothing, following all the principles listed above, and still be immodest. You must first clothe your heart with modesty as the Apostle Peter wrote in one of his letters:

“Your adornment must not be merely external – braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses; but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God. For in this way in former times the holy women also, who hoped in God, used to adorn themselves . . .” (I Peter 3:3-5, NASB).

HOME AND MOTHERHOOD

HMMotherhood

Home based upon Christian marriage is so evidently an institution of God, that a man must become profane before he can deny it . . . Of this realm WOMAN IS QUEEN. It takes its cue and its hue from her. If she is in the best sense womanly--if she is true and tender, loving and heroic, patient and self-devoted--she consciously or unconsciously organizes and puts in operation a set of influences that do more to mold the destiny of the nation than any man, uncrowned by power or eloquence, can possibly effect.
